Things to Do Near Abilene TX

3 min read

Most groups at Rusted Oaks spend most of their trip on the property—and for good reason. But if you want one afternoon in town, Abilene is close enough to make that easy.

On the Property (Why Most Groups Stay Put)

\n\n

Before you build a full itinerary, remember what’s already on-site: a resort pool with waterslide and grotto, game room, private theater, tennis court, baseball field, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, and open ranch views at sunset.

Dining Worth the Drive

  • Joe Allen’s BBQ — Abilene institution since 1981. No-frills, real Texas barbecue.

  • Groceries — H-E-B and United Supermarkets are both 15–20 minutes from the estate. Most groups stock up on arrival and use the chef’s kitchen.

The Honest Assessment

\n\n

Abilene isn’t Austin. What it offers is proximity without intrusion — enough restaurants and activities to fill a gap if you want one, and enough distance from the estate that once you’re back through the gate, it all disappears. Most groups plan one off-site dinner (Perini Ranch, usually) and spend the rest of their time on the property. That’s not a limitation — it’s the whole point.

Getting There

Rusted Oaks Estate sits off US Highway 84 in Lawn, TX — 15 minutes south of Abilene. The drive in from Abilene takes you through rolling West Texas ranch land. Most guests arrive via car. The nearest commercial airport is Abilene Regional Airport (ABI), with connections through Dallas-Fort Worth.

From Dallas: approximately 3 hours west on I-20 to US-83 south, then US-84 west. From San Antonio: under 4 hours north on US-87 then I-20 west. From Lubbock: about 2 hours south on US-84.

Stocking Up Before You Arrive

Most groups make one grocery run before heading to the estate and don’t leave until checkout. Abilene has a full H-E-B, United Supermarkets, Walmart Supercenter, and Costco — all within 15–20 minutes of the property. If you’re planning to use the outdoor grill or cook group meals in the kitchen, stock up on arrival. Liquor stores (Texas ABC-licensed) are also available in Abilene.

For specialty items — meat from a local butcher, fresh-baked goods, or anything you’d find at a farmers market — Abilene has options. Call ahead if you need specific cuts or quantities for a large group dinner.
